After a 10-year career in engineering, Joseph Roeder retired due to blindness caused by retinitis pigmentosa. He then starting working in information technology, specializing in adaptive technology for people who are blind. In 1997, Roeder joined NIB as a senior access technology specialist. In addition to providing technical training and support to people who are blind, he was instrumental in establishing Section 508 Compliance regulations, requiring all federal agencies to provide accessible data for employees with disabilities.
